On Digital

2 min read
I spent the latter part of Sunday afternoon noodling around with my dad's new camera. I have spent every waking moment since then plotting how to relocate this camera into my greedy little hands but that is neither here nor there. Anyway, Sunday afternoon/evening. The light was perfect, that golden tone it takes on toward then end of the day when the sun is thinking about setting and all told I took about 150-200 photos. After I uploaded them I started thinking about the cost that I would have incurred had these not been digital. 200 photos / 24 photos per roll of film = 9 rolls of film. Not cheap. Then I started looking at my shots and most of them I could throw out as mistakes. Too blurry. Over exposed. Ill timed. Badly composed past the point of post processing. I ended up with probably 30-40 keepers, if that.

The whole thing kind of got me thinking about digital photography and how it has changed the landscape of photography itself. The memory card on this camera holds 16GB worth of picture, which is an entire ass-ton, even at the highest resolution. There's no need to be careful about your set-up, your composition because if you just keep your finger trigger happy, you'll eventually come up with something. You'll through out the other 100 photos but you'll have a good shot. This wasn't the case with film. Whether this is detrimental or not, I'm not entirely sure. It is worth thinking about though.

Operator Error

I really hate it when I'm in the middle of working on something and the program freezes up. Namely because it is only then that I realize that I can't remember at all when it is that I saved last.

This time it was two days ago. My brilliance knows no bounds!
